What Is Agapolis?

Agape is unconditional divine love, and polis is an ancient Greek word for society or government.  Perhaps God's kingdom could be named "Agapolis."  God's vision for the world is centered on the establishment of His kingdom, defined by peace, reconciliation, justice, and the restoration of creation to a state of harmony. It involves uniting all things in Christ, overcoming violence and division, and creating a new humanity characterized by love, righteousness, and the knowledge of God.

Key Aspects of God's Vision:

  • Reconciliation and Peace: A central focus is transforming broken relationships between humanity and God, and among people, fostering a world where, as Isaiah 11 describes, enmity ceases.
  • The Kingdom of God: Jesus taught a vision of a world ruled by God's righteousness, marked by love, compassion, and justice
  • Environmental Stewardship: God’s vision includes the responsible care (shamar) of the natural world, protecting it as part of His creation.
  • Restoration and Healing: The vision aims to eliminate pain, sorrow, and death, leading to a "new heaven and a new earth".
  • Justice for the Oppressed: God desires a world where justice is upheld, protecting the vulnerable rather than allowing the exploitation of the poor. 

How the Vision is Realized:

  • The Body of Christ (The Church): Representing the Kingdom of God on earth by embodying love, humility, and patience.
  • Active Stewardship: Working to honor God through service, caring for others, and responsible stewardship of resources.
  • Personal Transformation: Individuals are invited to align their lives with this vision through faith, obedience, and allowing themselves to be transformed, rather than conforming to the world's ways.
